New Pediatrician Joins HRMC Medical Staff

Huron, S.D. – Jesse Van Heukelom, MD, a board-eligible pediatrician who grew up in Willow Lake, has joined the Huron Regional Medical Center medical staff as the community’s newest full-time physician.
Dr. Jesse, as he prefers to be called, provides kid-friendly care to children from newborn through adolescents. In addition to seeing patients in his clinic practice, Dr. Jesse is available for care of the newborn after delivery at HRMC, as well as after-hours care of illnesses or accidents in HRMC’s emergency room.
He earned a doctor of medicine degree from the Sanford School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota (USD) in Vermillion, S.D., as well as his bachelors in biology from USD. Dr. Jesse completed his internship and residency in Grand Rapids, Mich., at the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, a free-standing 100-bed children’s hospital with a 120-bed neonatal intensive care unit.
“During residency, I saw everything from common colds and ear infections to the complex, rare, uncommon diseases that normally you would only see and read about in text books which was really nice because I was able to get comfortable seeing a lot of different conditions and bring that experience here with me,” said Dr. Jesse.
“I was also able to complete a rotation through every single pediatric specialty, including pulmonology, cardiology, rheumatology and many others, in order to gain experience and overall knowledge of all those diverse specialties to benefit me in my practice here in Huron,” Dr. Jesse explained.
He also served as an assistant clinical professor during his three-year residency at Michigan State University. Dr. Jesse is certified in neonatal resuscitation, pediatric resuscitation and acute trauma life support.
He and his wife, Kathy (Brower), who was born and raised on a farm outside of Willow Lake, recently moved to Huron with their three small children: Maverick, 5 years; Everett, 3 years; and Ruth, 5 months. In his spare time, Dr. Jesse enjoys spending time with his family and playing with his children. He hopes to find some time to pheasant hunt this season and work on restoring his 1962 Chevy Apache.
“My family is very important to me and if I’m not seeing kids in the clinic, you’ll find me playing in the yard or at the park with my own kids,” said Dr. Jesse. “Childhood is such a special time and I am a big advocate of encouraging parents to lead an active lifestyle with their children to set that example and help keep the whole family healthy. Healthy kids are best – and I really feel it’s my job to partner with parents to raise healthy kids and, when needed, work together with them during times of illness and accidents.”
Dr. Jesse is now seeing patients at the HRMC Physicians Clinic at 534 Oregon Avenue. Appointments can be made by calling 605-353-7660.
